- Michael Turner Review added: 2018.01.05★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆Thirty years ago we lived around the corner from the King's Head in Great Baddow so this was a nostalgic visit to what used to be our local. We were warmly welcomed by Toni the newest landlady; her and her partner took over very recently. Toni filled us in on some of the pub's history since we left. It is a pleasant pub but quiet for a lunchtime. The array of menus was a bit confusing; one on the bar, a different menu on the table and then the blackboard.
I liked it but it did seem expensive for a lunchtime bite. We had scampi and chips, a chicken burger, a medium glass of white wine, a Beck's Blue and two coffees - £24.25 seemed a bit much. Perhaps after living in France for eleven years where that would have bought a four or five course lunch with wine for the two of us in any one of a dozen or so restaurants within driving distance.
It would certainly not be possible to eat there every day - perhaps that is why it was so quiet at lunchtime. I do wish the new owners success and hope they can find a winning formula.
